Let us look a little closer at the analogies between Jeremiah and Christ. We read in Jer 1:10,

Jer 1:10 See, I have this day set thee over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out, and to pull down, and to destroy, and to throw down, to build, and to plant.

That is an awesome power that God gave to Jeremiah. Actually, Jeremiah did not have this power but only God has this kind of power. God wrote these words to make us realize that Jeremiah is a picture of Christ, because Christ does have this power over the nations of the world. But look now carefully at the sequence in verse 10. First he is “to root out, and to pull down, and to destroy, and to throw down”, and after that he is “to build and to plant”. What could this possibly mean?

Please turn to chapter 31 of this Prophecy of Jeremiah, Jer 31:27. When we search this out we find that God Himself is going “to pluck up, and to throw down, and to destroy, and to afflict”, and after that he is “to build and to plant”. We read in Jer 31:27-28,

Jer 31:27 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of man, and with the seed of beast.

Jer 31:28 And it shall come to pass, that like as I have watched over them, to pluck up, and to break down, and to throw down, and to destroy, and to afflict; so will I watch over them, to build, and to plant, saith the LORD.

These words are almost identical to Jer 1:10. But who is God speaking about here in Jer 31:27-28? Is God speaking about the Jews who are returning to their homeland there east of the Mediterranean? No, not at all, because in Jer 1:10 God speaks about nations and kingdoms. Perhaps you have noticed that these words in Jer 31:27- 28 are a lead into the New Covenant that God introduced beginning in verse 31. The words in Jer 31:27-28 speak about God’s method of salvation. Christ is first destroying the old man before He builds the new man. Christ does that regardless of nation’s boundaries, or whether they are Jews or Gentiles. God will save for Himself a people from every tribe and tongue and nation of the world.

And did you see in verses 27-28 “Who” is doing all the work? God says: “I will do all that. I will pluck up and destroy, and I will build and plant”. But in Jer 1:10 God says that Jeremiah will do all that. Is it not clear that God is drawing this parallel between Christ and Jeremiah? There is one essential difference between Christ and Jeremiah: The Lord Jesus Christ was born sinless. The only other person on record who was born already saved was John the Baptist. But the passage in Jer 1 does not teach that Jeremiah was born saved.
